SK ON EDISON AWARD

SK ON BECAME THE FIRST GLOBAL BATTERY COMPANY TO WIN AN EDISON AWARD.

SK On, a leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, announced its NCM9 battery has achieved the Bronze award in EV Battery Enhancement of the Smart Transportation category at the prestigious Edison Awards 2023 on April 23. SK On is the first global battery manufacturer to win the Edison Award, with the exception of start-ups and R&D companies.

SK On was recognised for its pioneering development of the NCM9 battery. The NCM9 is the world’s first commercially available battery to contain nearly 90% nickel. NCM is an acronym for nickel, cobalt and magnesium, the three main components used in electric car batteries:

The higher nickel content in the NCM9 battery provides better battery output and increased energy efficiency, enabling electric vehicles to achieve higher performance. However, the higher nickel content can also sometimes lead to problems with battery life and thermal safety, which is why it was necessary to use more advanced manufacturing technology to produce the battery.

In order to overcome these problems, SK On has used a number of special technologies, including its proprietary Z-folding technique. Z-folding technology is a process whereby the anode and cathode sides are separated by separators in a zig-zag pattern at the intersections to ensure a higher level of safety.

Prior to winning the Edison Award, SK On’s NCM9 battery had already proven its technological efficiency by winning the CES Innovation Award, one of the world’s largest technology trade shows, two years in a row.

At CES 2023, SK On won the Best Innovation Award in the Embedded Technologies category with its SF (Super Fast) battery, primarily for charging speed and performance. This recognition is also a first of its kind in the Korean battery industry.

Established in 1987, the Edison Awards are an annual competition to recognise excellence in new product and service development, marketing, design, and innovation. Named after Thomas Alva Edison, an internationally renowned American inventor and businessman.

“SK On’s battery technology has once again proven itself by winning a very prestigious award in the United States after winning the CES Best Innovation Award,” said a representative of SK On. “We will continue to showcase advanced battery technologies in the future.”

SK On’s NCM9 battery received a bronze award in the “Smart Transport” category.

After winning the “Best of Innovation Award” at CES (Consumer Electronics Show), SK On has now won recognition for its technology again.
